About Chakras


"Striving for Artistic Distinction."


Chakras is an exceptional classical Indian dance community. It asks those who join it to understand and share in this ancient art. It offers support and assistance towards the traditional Indian classical dance codes.


It is a place for those who are curious, who are capable, and even prepared to fail as part of a growth process. It is a community whose members comprise of the students and their parents aspiring this growth process. 


The mainstay of Chakras is the involvement between students, teachers and parents who develop projects and programmes together. What we share is a commitment to strive for innovation and artistic distinction.


Chakras fosters professional competence within its curriculum, while encouraging work that goes beyond the boundaries of the art form.


Chakras is an open academy for all who will towards classical Indian dance.

Smt. Savitri Naidoo

A Bharatanatyam exponent in the classical Panda Nallur style, a skilled choreographer, inspiring teacher and a pioneer in the promotion of Indian Arts in South Africa. Her dance foundation rooted in the western genres of Ballet, Modern and Spanish dance before discovering the beautiful heritage of Indian Dance. Soon after finishing the HSC equivalent, Savitri accompanied by her Mother left for India to pursue her passion under the tutelage of the eminent Guru Natya Kala Ratnam, Natya Kala Bhushan Smt Indira Ragan, studying in the traditional manner living with her Guru. After her Arangetram she studied kathak in Mauritius and with the blessing of her, Guru Vadhini Natyalaya was established, later known as Vadhini Indian Arts. On subsequent visits to India, she broadened her repertoire in Bharatanatyam under Smt. Indira Rajan, Smt Vyjanathimala, Madurai R Muralidharan and the Dhanajayans. Savitri also trained in Tradition Indian folk dance at Darpana academy in Ahmedabad and Triveni College in Delhi. She has been privileged to perform and work alongside South Africa’s leading Artists and choreographers, performing and facilitating master classes in Chennai, Mauritius, Poland, Germany, Botswana and nationally in South Africa.


Savitri spearheaded Vadhini for over three decades staging highly acclaimed innovative productions, collaborative works, experimental outreach projects and establishing the curriculum for Bharatanatyam as a HSC equivalent subject. Following that, in 2010 she immigrated to Australia where she founded the Chakras Performing Arts building the institution of the same values, sincerity and passion.



 Since its inception, the students have had the opportunity to perform at a range of diverse cultural and artistic events. The academy demonstrated practise of being politically aware, socially responsible and multi-culturally inclusivity and has ensured that the strong tradition of Indian dance is matched by the uniquely Australian philosophy of dance from around the globe.Highlights include performing at Newcastle Bollywood conference, India Independence Day celebrations, Arpan, Fiesta on Australian day, Chakras productions, Bharatiya Rang, South African 150 years, Asia Pacific Special Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremony, India Republic Day celebration – Indian Consulate Sydney, Snow White, Nritya Dharshanam Cinderella in India, Rhythms of Bollywood Harmony day and numerous Charity events. 15 students have completed their course in Australia. 


She is the recipient of the Swami Thyagaraja award for Arts and culture promotion in South Africa and recently received the Arts and Culture Award from Gopio Australia. She is also the recipient of the Nritya Kala Ratana award from the 2018 Vasant Utsav held in Chennai, India. 


Objectives

  • To impress upon the participant that a little bit of initiative will allow them to enjoy an intimate relationship with a classical art form.

 

  • To develop timeless life skills through dance experiences.


  • To use the arts for cross-cultural sensitivity, we can show how Indian Australians think as a community and how this influences wider society.


  • To allow the rich Indian Cultural heritage to be integrated into Western society while also providing them with the opportunities to be ambassadors of the art.
