We teach a structured curriculum consisting of 7 grades, each externally examined. Theory is an important component of this course. Students attend regular workshops conducted by both national and international visiting teachers. The minimum age requirement across our school in all artforms is 6 years upon registration.
- Grade 1 : basic foundational techniques including but not limited to adavus, single hand gestures (asamyukta hastas), mandalas, bharatanatyam terminology, introduction to theology. In this grade the items taught include Alarippu and Pushpanjali.
- Grade 2 : completion of adavus, variations of adavus, double hand gestures (samyukta hastas), bhedas. In this grade the items taught include Pushpanjali and Jathiswaram.
- Grade 3 : students are introduced to the techniques of bhavam and abhinayam. In this grade the items taught include Keerthanam and Sabdam.
- Grade 4 : a deeper insight into dance technique and the various layas of music is explored. In this grade the items taught include a varied range of Thillanas.
- Grade 5 : an intense study of bhavam items ranging from Keerthanam, Padams, Javalis and Ashtapathis is conducted.
- Grade 6 : in this grade we focus on the central gem of Bharatnatyam, the varanam. This encapsulates all the elements of Bharatnatyam and techniques the student has learnt in the grades above.
- Grade 7 : having learnt a full margam, the students now prepare for a stamina exam. They play a role in selecting a traditional margam from their large repertoire. This is performed to a panel of external examiners, giving each student the opportunity to experience a margam performance irrespective whether they choose to perform an arangetram or not.
